Challenge
Defence engaged RD to help simplify and explain the newly reformed One Defence Capability System (ODCS). The reform impacted how capability projects were developed for government and required capability managers to quickly understood and adhere to the changes.
Policy is typically dry, detailed and lengthy. To ensure capability managers could quickly understand the changes, we needed to help our client deliver engaging bite-sized content without diluting accuracy.
Approach
RD developed a series of four animations to simplify the reformed system for capability managers.
Through user interviews, key areas of confusion and difficulty were identified – guiding the development of focused topics for each animation.
A series of scripts were crafted using simple, friendly language, incorporating storytelling to make the content more memorable and set the foundations for the animation.
Working within brand guidelines, RD developed a visual identity that built on Defence’s existing brand, while providing an edgier approach to animated explainers to cut-through. A collage style allowed real Defence imagery to be incorporated, when necessary, while balancing quirky elements to add lightness.
To ensure managers could quickly understand the changes, we needed to help our client deliver engaging bite-sized content without diluting accuracy.
Impact
The animated explainers were distributed across key Defence channels and have become a key communication product used to brief in and educate the workforce on the reformed capability system.

Brand spanking new! Building a bold brand for ACTivate Capital
Venture capital is a cluttered market, and brands tend to stick to a few norms: if it’s not an abstract image of “tech,” it’s a picture of a skyscraper. But this wasn’t going to work for ACTivate Capital.
