Supporting local educators to adopt and teach with AI

Challenge

As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly accessible, educators are being asked to navigate both its potential and its risks. A local Canberra high school wanted to help its teaching staff understand how AI could be used safely, responsibly and practically, while protecting academic integrity, student learning and privacy.

The challenge was not simply to demonstrate what AI tools could do. Educators needed practical guidance to determine where AI could add value, where professional judgement remained essential and where clear boundaries and safeguards were required.

Approach

RD Consulting delivered a tailored Art of the Possible with AI session designed around the realities of classroom teaching and school operations.

Rather than focusing on abstract technology concepts, we used practical examples across:

• lesson planning
• assessment design
• administration
• staff workflows
• academic integrity
• responsible AI use.

The session introduced two practical frameworks to help educators make informed decisions about AI:

• The AI Assessment Scale, providing clarity on when AI should not be used, when it can assist and when AI-generated content requires critical evaluation and citation.
• The two-lane assessment approach, helping educators distinguish between lower-risk productivity applications and higher-risk assessment contexts requiring clear boundaries and firm safeguards.

We also facilitated an open discussion with teaching staff to explore concerns around academic integrity, student learning, privacy and governance. This ensured the session addressed the issues that mattered most to educators and reinforced that teachers should remain firmly in control of how AI is introduced and applied.

Impact

The session gave educators a clearer and more confident starting point for responsible AI adoption.

Teaching staff could see how tools such as Microsoft Copilot and Gemini could reduce administrative workload and support teaching and learning, without replacing professional judgement or compromising academic integrity.

Most importantly, educators left with practical frameworks to guide their own use of AI and help students develop the critical thinking, evaluation and responsible technology skills they will need for an AI-enabled future.
